The Indiana Department of Insurance divides a company's share of complaints by its share of Indiana premiums for the line. 1.00 is average, below 1 means fewer complaints than its size would suggest. Indiana lists only companies with at least one complaint and does not calculate an index (marked DNC) for companies with under $1 million of premiums.
How to read the Michigan complaint ratio
The Department of Insurance and Financial Services divides each company's complaints by its Michigan direct premiums written, in millions of dollars. It publishes ratios only for companies with at least $1 million of premiums, and warns that ratios based on small premium volumes "are highly variable".
